Shanghai versus Osaka——Culture Shock and Confusion

When watching Detective Conan

I was astonished at their school uniform.

If you don't get the point, next, I'll show you

👕· 👕· 👕   China's school uniform.  👕· 👕· 👕

They are mostly oversize (not for fashion purpose) sportswear,

Most Chinese students regard them as ugly and outdated.

And most of them are like me, feel envious of Japanese students' school uniform.

✏️ ✏️ ✏️ ✏️ Why it is different? ✏️ ✏️ ✏️ ✏️

Japan has its unique school uniform culture. Japan's school uniform has already developed into a cultural symbol that highlights the youth, beauty and freedom of Japanese youth.

While for China, the function of the school uniform is different. Chinese high schools emphasise education and academic performance much more than students' individualized development and appearance. Moreover, Chinese culture is more conservational, and Chinese people may be less accepting of girls' wearing short skirts at school.

At first, I was surprised at how beautiful the Japanese school uniform is.
After I knew it, for me, it is just a cultural difference for me rather than shock.

While some of the Chinese girl students, or even university students will BUY JK (Japanese high school) uniform online and wear it in spare time.

Interestingly, this phenomenon becomes a culture shock to Japanese students. For them, it is WEIRD to wear a uniform after school. They may even regard it as cosplay.

Minimise ‘culture shock’ or ‘culture confusion.’

  • Sometimes, there is no need to be shocked at all.
  • Every country has different conditions, development status, and culture. Do not follow blindly.
  • It always takes time to bring in new stuff and to WAIT for the majority's acceptance and market expansion.
